I'm the only one who thinks this is awesome? For those of you who don't know what Skype is, it is free VOIP software akin to Teamspeak and Ventrilo, except you don't have to set up a server, and the sound quality is much better than either of those. It has always been free to call from one PC to another, up to 10 people at once, and you had the option to purchase credits to call regular phones from Skype. Now, it is free to call any landline or mobile phone from your PC anywhere within the US or Canada, at least until December 31 of this year. So, if you are running low on cellphone minutes, or are paying a lot for long-distance calls, this can save you some money. Did I mention it's free?

I tried this out last night and it works. Called my own house and everyone knew i was home, and they said "Wtf how are you calling us!?!!" I just laughed at them.

Then i tested the long distance out, and called someone in Texas, and it worked too. This is an awesome feature! I cant wait to call more people from my PC!

yha I just called my home, was curious... I heard of this a few days ago when tomshardware had it in thier news.

I heard of/used skype before I even knew what TS and Vent were, friends talk on it all the time.

For one weird reason I cannot get it to call for free.. :\

Can anyone help me? Do I have to purchase credit first?

No, you don't, but dialing is a bit different. To dial a number, you need to dial + then the area code then the number.

So, (123) 555-1212 would be dialed like this: +1235551212

It might say you need to purchase credits, but ignore that. Also, make sure you have the latest update for Skype.

I actually did the area code etc.. but its still not working..

Maybe because I try to cheat and set up an American account and I am still in the Netherlands.. but I dont think that should really matter or how do they check that?

I just wish I was able to call my fiance :\

It matters, they only have it setup free in the U.S. and Canada. If there is a way to spoof it I don't know.

If he is on a computer, and you are, then you can talk free - Skype has always been that way. Just set it up on both, and you can call each other all day every day.
